“Teacher-made Mathematics Teaching Aids” for Primary School Teachers: The 1st Regular Course organised by SEAQiM in 2022

SEAQiM continues to be committed to running its programs even amid a pandemic. The first regular course was held on March 8-12, 2022. This course has been participated by 34 Primary School Teachers from 7 SEAMEO Member countries: Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia.

SEAQiM works and collaborates closely with the Ministry of Education in SEAMEO Member countries in the selection process for their best teachers before being officially nominated to participate in the course. SEAQiM also invited reputable facilitators such as Mr Tim Brzezinski, the Instructional Mathematics Coach at Clinton Avenue School (for New Haven Public Schools in Connecticut, USA), Prof Dr Isti Hidayah from Semarang State University, Dr Ariyadi Wijaya from State University Yogyakarta to be the facilitator of the training. Furthermore, the centre has an academic team (Dr Sumardyono, Dr Farida Nurhasanah, Wahid Yunianto, Ummy Salmah, Russasmita, Uki Rahmawati, Tyas wirani, Gusnandar Yoga and Miftahul hidayah) who are experts in mathematics education.

Furthermore, the participants had the opportunity to have real teaching at two Primary schools in the Philippines dan Thailand virtually, namely: San Francisco Pilot Central Elementary School and Kalasinpittayasai School, Thailand on 21 March 2022. Generally, all participants have actively engaged in all activities guided by the facilitators. Further, the course outputs are lesson plans, real teaching reports, daily assignments, and action plan proposals.

Lastly, the course aims to enhance participants’ competencies in developing, creating and using manipulative mathematics teaching aids using simple material available and to allow participants to understand the current issues, strategies and approaches, and the roles of teaching aid in mathematics teaching and learning.

In the closing ceremony, Ms Miftahul Hidayah, the academic supervisor, announced the three best participants according to the academic evaluation: Mr Hendra Hendayana from Indonesia, Mr Rowelito Q Damuag from the Philippines and Ms Realita Mahanani from Indonesia.

Lastly, the Centre Director, Dr Sumardyono congratulated all participants for completing the course and being a part of the SEAQiM big family.
