On 16 January 2025, a pivotal event is set to take place as the SEAMEO Secretariat, together with representatives from Seven SEAMEO Regional Centres in Indonesia (7 SCI) consisting of SEAMEO BIOTROP, SEAMEO CECCEP, SEAMEO QITEP in Language, SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics, SEAMEO QITEP in Science, SEAMEO RECFON, and SEAMEO SEAMOLEC conducted a courtesy visit to Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti, M.Ed., Minister of Primary and Secondary Education of Indonesia, at Gedung A, Kemdikdasmen, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Jakarta. This significant meeting symbolizes a renewed commitment to advancing education across Southeast Asia.
This visit, initiated at the request of the SEAMEO Secretariat and warmly accepted by the minister, marks a momentous occasion to deepen partnerships and collaboration with the Indonesian government. By aligning efforts with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, SEAMEO aims to support the achievement of inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education for all, alongside lifelong learning opportunities that are key to the region’s development.
The central aim of this courtesy visit is to introduce SEAMEO, an intergovernmental organization committed to promoting regional cooperation in education, science, and culture. It also aims to showcase the remarkable contributions of the SEAMEO Regional Centres in Indonesia in driving innovation and excellence in education.
The event commenced with a message from Datuk Dr. Habibah Abdul Rahim, Director of the SEAMEO Secretariat, who gave an introductory presentation. Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti then gave a general introduction to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education policies.
Dr. Sumardyono, Director of SEAQiM, showcased various key programmes to meet the needs of mathematics teachers. This presentation will outline SEAMEO’s pivotal role in fostering regional development through education and highlight the organization’s impactful initiatives.
Key topics discussed included policies on numeracy and literacy, access to education for all (inclusivity), teacher education, and the SEAMEO Conference held in early June. Datuk Habibah also highlighted the general contributions of SEAMEO Regional Centres for Education to the Southeast Asian region. The one-hour meeting concluded with an exchange of insights between SEAMES and the Directorate General of Primary and Secondary Education, followed by a group photo session.
This courtesy visit reinforces SEAMEO’s partnership with Indonesia and amplifies its collective vision for Southeast Asia. This engagement underscores SEAMEO’s dedication to empowering education systems across the region by presenting a unified front and highlighting shared goals. Together, SEAMEO and its partners stand poised to inspire a future where education is a powerful enabler of sustainable development, equity, and innovation.
