Visit to STEM Village Joho

On the afternoon of November 22, 2024, as part of the ongoing best practice sharing activities between SEAQiM and IPGM Darulaman, a delegation visited STEM Village Joho, a community developed by SEAQiM to promote STEM education and sustainable practices. Located in the heart of a vibrant village, STEM Village Joho is known for its creativity, innovation, and eco-friendly craftsmanship, with a particular focus on introducing STEM to local residents.

During the visit, participants were introduced to the eco-printing technique, a sustainable practice where natural materials like leaves, flowers, and other plant-based elements are used to create stunning prints on fabric. One of the eco-printing techniques demonstrated involved arranging leaves on fabric, stepping on them to apply pressure, and then boiling the fabric to reveal the vibrant prints. This method not only produces beautiful artwork but also promotes environmental conservation by utilizing locally sourced, natural materials instead of synthetic ones.

The participants, including students and lecturers from IPGM Darulaman, were actively involved in a hands-on eco-printing workshop, where they learned the steps of the process under the guidance of local women artisans. Everyone enjoyed the unique experience, with the community’s expertise and warmth enriching the learning atmosphere.

Beyond the artistic experience, the visit highlighted the positive social impacts of STEM Village Joho. The initiative has played a key role in improving the local economy, particularly for the women in the village, who benefit from selling eco-printed fabrics. Additionally, the children in the community are becoming more interested in STEM subjects, inspired by the practical application of science and creativity in their surroundings.

In conclusion, the visit to STEM Village Joho was an inspiring and educational experience, illustrating how creativity can be harnessed to promote sustainability. It also emphasized the importance of integrating STEM education into everyday life, fostering environmental awareness and inspiring future generations to engage with science, technology, and sustainability.
