Using calculator, why not?

PPPPTK Matematika and SEAQiM supported by CASIO successfully held a Training of Trainer (ToT) on Using Calculator for Mathematics Teaching and Learning. Located at Gamma Room, PPPTK Matematika, the training began on 22 January 2017.

A total of 35 vocational and senior high school mathematics teachers from 33 provinces in Indonesia participated in the event. Prior to the participation, they must pass strict selection processes conducted by the host committee. PPPPTK Matematikan and SEAQiM also sent their best staff to join in the training.

Dr. Daswatia said during her opening speech, “The participants in this training are all very special. It is because they are the representatives from their own province. They are the chosen teachers”, followed by participants crowd applause.

Even though focused more on the use of calculator for mathematics teaching and learning, but the committee also provided the participants with some topics related to the new trends and issues in mathematics education in general. The introduction on the use of calculator was delivered by Prof. Barry Kissane from Murdoch University, Australia. The participants were also enthusiastic discussing the international case study on mathematics literacy with Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Widodo from Gadjah Mada University). Other facilitators invited to the training were DR. Daswatia Astuty (head of PPPPTK Matematika), teacher trainers of PPPPTRK Matematika, and specialists of SEAQiM.

At the end of the training, the participants were requested to write a lesson plan in group and have teaching practice and reflection. Furthermore, they must disseminate the knowledge they gained during the training once they completed the activities. In doing so, the participants prepared an individual action plan which contained a proposal of activity to be implemented in their own origins.

Ms. Muti, SEAQiM’s representative for the training, felt so impressed by the way the facilitators make the participants familiar with the use of calculator. “Prof. Barry really inspires me. I just do not know what to say, he is so patient, explaining us one by one when we find difficulties. His dedication and behaviour while teaching really impress me”.

The eight-day training run very well and was officially closed on 29 January 2017 by the Director of SEAQiM, Dr. Wahyudi. Within the closing ceremony, the committee announced the name of three best participants who were awarded with certificate of achievement. Becoming the First Best Participants was Mr. Bayu Riadi (SMAN 17 Palembang). The Second and Third place went to Ms. Chandar Sri Ubayanti (SMAN 1 Fakfak) and Mr. Asmar Ahmad (SMAN 13 Makassar) respectively.
