Strengthening Educational Collaboration: SEAQiM Visits Sriwijaya University, Palembang

Palembang, November 19, 2024 – Sriwijaya University’s Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) hosted a fruitful meeting with a delegation from SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM). The event, attended by FKIP leadership, faculty members, and students from undergraduate to doctoral programs, aimed to explore collaborative opportunities to enhance mathematics education and research in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Dr. Hartono, M.A., Dean of FKIP, warmly welcomed the SEAQiM team. He highlighted FKIP’s achievements through a profile video showcasing the faculty’s commitment to educational excellence. Dr. Hartono emphasized that this visit would pave the way for meaningful collaborations, culminating in agreements to advance mathematics education. He expressed FKIP’s full support for SEAQiM’s initiatives, reaffirming the shared goal of improving mathematics education standards across Indonesia and the region.

The Deputy Director for Administration (DDA) of SEAQiM commended FKIP for its achievements, as reflected in the profile video, and introduced SEAQiM’s mission to align with Indonesia’s Ministry of Education’s six priority programs, including the promotion of STEM education. SEAQiM also highlighted its internship opportunities for Sriwijaya University students, enabling them to gain professional experience in education-focused projects.

The Deputy Director for Program (DDP) presented SEAQiM’s flagship initiatives, to explore collaborative opportunities. The discussion delved into potential collaborations including joint management of Scopus-indexed journals, leveraging FKIP’s expertise and SEAQiM’s network, collaborative international seminars for Southeast Asian educators, STEM and PMRI (Realistic Mathematics Education) training programs for teachers across the region, and internship opportunities and student engagement.

Professor Ratu Ilma Indra Putri expressed enthusiasm for advancing research and workshops for educators, particularly in RME and lesson studies. She also welcomed collaborations on journal management and expanding opportunities for Southeast Asian educators to benefit from Sriwijaya University’s resources.

The visit marked a significant step toward building synergies between SEAQiM and Sriwijaya University to strengthen mathematics education, research, and innovation across Southeast Asia.
