One Step Closer, SEAQiM Produce Instrument to Measure Mathematics Teachers’ Competence in Southeast Asia

Yogyakarta: Dr Susetyo Widiasmoro, the Deputy Director for Administration representing the Director of SEAQiM, warmly welcomed twenty participants at the opening ceremony of the Workshop on Developing SEAQiM Teachers’ Proficiency Instrument for SEA Mathematics Teachers. The participants consisting of BBGP DIY, Yogyakarta State University (UNY), Islamic State University-Sunan Kalijaga (UIN Sunan Kalijaga), Tidar University (UNTIDAR), Ahmad Dahlan University (UAD), Sanata Dharma University (USD), and the academic team from SEAQiM were gathered in Conference Room, SEAQiM to discuss in an attractive forum of developing the instrument, that has been conducted on 17-18 November 2022. The workshop was conducted live for the participants, who were instrument writers, and via Zoom for the speaker.

The workshop is the 1st phase of developing an instrument that will be the closest way to produce the final output, namely the SEAQiM Teachers’ Proficiency Instrument for SEA Mathematics Teachers. Assoc. Prof. Allan Leslie White from the University of Western Sydney, on the first day of the workshop enlighten about SEA Teacher Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge. Previously, Dr Farida Nurhasanah shared the Overview of SEAQiM Teachers’ Proficiency Instrument for SEA Math Teachers. The material is to equalize the perception of the writers before going to the next phase. The 2nd phase arranges to be held on 1 December 2022 live at SEAQiM, and the 3rd is on 15 December 2022. During the instrument preparation, from November to December, the process to the progress report and collection of the instrument that ready to cross-review resulted to the ready-to-upload item to Moodle.

A lively discussion is a correct word to describe the environment of the whole two-days workshop, yet it drains the participants’ minds and energy. In line with the main aims of the series of activities is to develop the teacher standards in Southeast Asia, based on the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge) indicators, teachers are expected to master technology integrated into the learning process. SEAQiM believes that the writing team’s contribution significantly impacts the quality improvement of mathematics education in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia.
