Introducing STEM to Primary School teachers in Toba Regency

Yogyakarta: SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM) conducted In-Country Course on STEM for Mathematics Learning for Primary School Teachers virtually on 7 – 11 November 2022. This course has also collaborated with Education, Youth, and Sports Office in Toba District, North Sumatera.

In line with one of SEAQiM’s goals, which is to establish an extensive network and collaboration, the course was one of the implementations of the partnership between SEAQiM and the Education, Youth, and Sports Office in the Toba District. The course was officially opened by The Acting Head of Education, Youth, and Sports Office, Drs Rikardo Hutajulu, M.Pd., on Monday (7/11/2022). He said the participants could participate in the course to improve the competency of primary school teachers and mathematics education in Toba.

“Congratulation to the primary teachers who were selected to be the participants of the course. I also thanked SEAQiM, who organized the Course on STEM for Mathematics Learning for our teachers in Toba District. We hoped that after participating in this course, the teacher would have new insight into STEM, which could be implemented in the classroom. I also hoped we could organize the other course in Toba district directly.”

During the five-day course, 40 primary teachers have been facilitated by the experts from Universitas Syiah Kuala Aceh, Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, PhD Student in STEM Austria and SEAQiM. The participants were enthusiastic about making the hands-on STEM projects for Mathematics Learning even though the facilitators guided them virtually on the hands-on activities.
