Happy Pi Day! SEAQiM Celebrates Pi Day 2025 with an Inspiring Webinar: “Touching Mathematics with SMILE”

Yogyakarta, 14 March 2025 – In celebration of Pi Day and the International Day of Mathematics (IDM), the SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM) in collaboration with Mathematics Education Department of Yogyakarta State University successfully held a webinar titled “Touching Mathematics with SMILE” on March 14, 2025. This online event brought together mathematics enthusiasts, educators, and students to explore the profound beauty and significance of mathematics in everyday life.

Each year, the International Day of Mathematics adopts a different theme to highlight various aspects of the subject. For 2025, the theme is “Mathematics, Art, and Creativity.” SEAQiM embraced this theme by organizing the webinar as an initiative designed with SMILE, which stands for Savvy, Maintain, Intimate, Love, Engage to present mathematics in an engaging and relatable manner. The webinar aims to make mathematics more accessible to all, from educators and students to parents and the general public, by demonstrating its relevance and beauty beyond textbooks and equations.

The webinar featured esteemed speakers who shared perspectives on the role of mathematics in various aspects of life. Each session provided fresh insights, sparking appreciation among participants. Dr. Sumardyono (Director of SEAQiM) delivered the first session, “Touching Mathematics & Pi through Numismatics & Philately.” This fascinating presentation explored how mathematical concepts are embedded in everyday objects such as coins and stamps. Participants discovered the historical and numerical significance of designs found in currency and postal memorabilia, showcasing how mathematics plays a role in art, history, and economics.

Drs Sahid, M.Sc. (Yogyakarta State University – UNY) followed with “What Do You Know About Pi?” This session delved deep into the origins, properties, and applications of π, from ancient civilizations to modern-day technology.

Dra Puji Iryanti, M.Sc.Ed (Deputy Director Administration of SEAQiM) concluded the main sessions with “Enjoy Learning Mathematics with My Parents.” This discussion emphasized the critical role parents play in shaping children’s attitudes toward mathematics. By integrating mathematical concepts into daily activities and fostering a supportive learning environment, parents can help children develop confidence and enthusiasm for problem-solving.

The webinar, hosted on Zoom, was attended by about 160 diverse audience, including teachers, lecturers, pre-service mathematics educators, and students. The event facilitated an open exchange of ideas, with participants actively engaging in discussions and sharing their thoughts on how mathematics can be made more enjoyable and meaningful. SEAQiM continues to support educators and students in developing a deeper and more joyful engagement with mathematics.
