Yogyakarta, 5 August 2024 – SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics proudly inaugurated the online Regular Course on Southeast Asia Realistic Mathematics Education (SEA-RME) for Primary School Teachers. The event, from 5 August to 4 September 2024, aims to provide mathematics teachers with a different perspective on teaching mathematics. Teachers are introduced to various contexts, models, and norms to promote meaningful learning, enhancing the quality of mathematics education across Southeast Asia.
The opening ceremony took place in the morning via Zoom meeting. It was attended by distinguished guests and twenty-five (25) participants from across the region (Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia). The ceremony commenced with a welcome and opening speech by Dr. Sumardyono, SEAQiM Director, who emphasized the importance of innovative teaching methods in improving student engagement and understanding of mathematics.
Dr. Sumardyono highlighted SEAQiM’s commitment to supporting educators with realistic mathematics education methodologies. “This course is a testament to our dedication to advancing mathematics education in Southeast Asia. By equipping teachers with the skills to implement Realistic Mathematics Education (RME), we aim to foster a generation of critical thinkers and problem solvers,” he stated.
The first day of the course ended with a key highlight of the expert session facilitated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maarten Dolk, an expert in Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) from Utrecht University, the Netherlands. The session focused on Introduction to RME and continued with Concepts and Principles of RME, demonstrating its effectiveness in making mathematics more relatable and engaging for primary school students. Participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and discussions, gaining valuable knowledge and tools to implement RME in their classrooms.
In a month, participants will engage in a series of collaborative activities designed to deepen their understanding of RME and its application in the classroom. The course will culminate in a final result where participants will showcase their learning outcomes and plans for integrating RME into their classrooms.
