Strengthening Regional Cooperation in Education — Official Visit of the SEAMEO Council President in Indonesia

Her Excellency Datin Seri Setia Dr. Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd. Salleh, Minister of Education of Brunei Darussalam and President of the SEAMEO Council, conducted an official visit to Indonesia from December 2 to 6, 2025, as part of continued efforts to enhance regional cooperation, strengthen institutional networks, and accelerate educational innovation among SEAMEO member countries.

The official programme included a series of meetings, centre visits, and collaborative activities designed to highlight SEAMEO’s priority areas, particularly in the fields of STEM education, teacher capacity development, and community-based learning. Accompanying Her Excellency throughout the visit was Ms. Pintip Iamnirath, Deputy Director for Administration and Communication, who represented the SEAMEO Secretariat and ensured effective coordination and communication between regional centres.

A prior coordination meeting between the Bureau of Planning and Cooperation of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and the SEAMEO Centres in Indonesia resulted in several agreements to welcome the SEAMEO Council President in Jakarta and Bandung. SEAQiM, based in Yogyakarta, actively participated in the agenda, joining activities hosted at SEAQiS in Bandung. The programme in Bandung featured an official reception, a curated STEM exhibition, and a visit to a local school to observe innovative teaching practices.

On 3 December 2025, SEAQiM presented a special booth showcasing creative products from Kampung STEM, a community empowerment initiative driven by SEAQiM to support local families through mathematics, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The booth showcased handmade STEM-based crafts created by mothers from Kampung STEM, illustrating how grassroots engagement can foster scientific literacy, economic opportunities, and local ownership of STEM education.

During the visit, SEAQiM Director Dr. Sri Wulandari Danoebroto delivered a presentation outlining SEAQiM’s flagship programs, recent achievements, and strategic efforts in advancing mathematics education across Indonesia and the Southeast Asian region. The presentation covered teacher development initiatives, international collaborations, research activities, STEM learning models, and community-based projects that contribute to SEAMEO’s mission of inclusivity and quality education.

This visit provided a meaningful platform for dialogue, the exchange of ideas, and the strengthening of cross-centre cooperation. Discussions emphasized shared priorities, including digital learning, regional mobility, school outreach, and sustainable community-based education programs. The warm reception, productive exchanges, and spirit of collaboration throughout the visit reflected SEAMEO’s ongoing commitment to building impactful partnerships and driving innovation in education.

Overall, the engagements in Bandung underscored the importance of regional synergy, knowledge sharing, and collective action in supporting transformative education across Southeast Asia. The visit is expected to lead to continued collaboration, joint initiatives, and strengthened institutional relationships that will benefit teachers, students, and communities in the region.
