Yogyakarta, June 24 -26, 2024 – The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Personnel in Mathematics (SEAQiM) recently conducted a workshop titled “Workshop Pengembangan Pojok Numerasi” to promote the development of numeracy corners in schools. This initiative aims to enhance students’ numeracy skills across Southeast Asia.
Held at the Conference Room, SEAQiM, the workshop gathered twelve (20) primary school teachers from ten (10) piloting schools in Yogyakarta. The event focused on creating dynamic and engaging numeracy corners in classrooms, designed to make mathematics learning more interactive and enjoyable for students.
The Director of SEAQiM, represented by Dr. Sri Wulandari Danoebroto, the Deputy Director of Programme, highlighted the critical role of numeracy in students’ overall academic development and future success. “Numeracy is essential for students to navigate their daily lives and for their future careers. By integrating numeracy corners into classrooms, we aim to create a stimulating environment where students can develop a love for mathematics and enhance their problem-solving skills,” she stated.
The workshop featured various sessions, including sharing session with Dr. Ariyadi Wijaya from Yogyakarta State University, and Ms Meita Fitrianawati from Ahmad Dahlan University, continued with hands-on activities, design and implement media for numeracy corner, and presentations on innovative teaching tools led by SEAQiM academic team. They showcased how to incorporate both traditional and digital resources into numeracy corners, making them effective and appealing to students.
Teachers and educators who attended the workshop expressed their appreciation for the new insights and resources provided. This workshop is a follow-up activity after the first mentoring, as a part of Program Pojok Numerasi conducted in 2024. SEAQiM plans to support the implementation of numeracy corners by providing workshops and resources to schools, mentoring, and webinars. This initiative is part of SEAQiM’s broader mission to improve the quality of mathematics education and ensure that students are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
The workshop concluded with a pledge from all participants to collaborate and share knowledge, ensuring the continuous improvement of numeracy education. With the successful completion of this workshop, SEAQiM is optimistic about the positive impact of numeracy corners on students’ learning outcomes with the variety of educational resources, including visual aids specifically designed for numeracy corners.
