Friday, 9 June 2023 – SEAQiM successfully finished the In-country Course on Joyful Learning in Mathematics Education for Primary School Teachers in collaboration with the Department of Education–Region III, Tarlac City, Republic of the Philippines. This one-week course was conducted online through Zoom from 5 to 9 June 2023 as a form of mathematics training initiative from the Principals of Tarlac City School Division, Dr Jessie B. Aquino. The course offers participants comprehensive strategies and resources for joyful, exciting, and meaningful learning in their mathematics classroom.
SEAQiM designs the Course on Joyful Learning in Mathematics Education, a program to provide mathematics teachers with a different perspective in teaching mathematics. This course engaged forty-one (41) teachers from primary schools in the Philippines to be well introduced to various joyful activities, discovering, exploring, and problem-solving wrapped in mathematics games and hands-on activities to promote meaningful learning. These activities will help students to achieve higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). With assistance and guidance from the SEAQiM facilitators, participants are invited to learn and explore the current issues and trends in mathematics education, the concept and principles of joyful learning in mathematics education, instructional strategies and approaches for joyful learning, outdoor mathematics, differentiated instructions in mathematics education and alternative assessment in joyful learning.
Dr Ma. Irelyn P. Tamayo, the CESO V – Schools Division Superintendent Department of Education – Region III, Tarlac City, emphasized the importance of joyful learning in mathematics. She said, “If our learners can apply joyful mathematical learning concepts, then in the end, mathematics is one of the subjects they will enjoy the most and have a deeper understanding of. I hope our participants enjoy the learning course, then they can apply the experience with happiness and joy in their respective classrooms” at the opening remark. As well as Dr Sumardyono, SEAQiM’s Director, highly expected the participants to share their experiences from the course and implement joyful mathematics lessons developed by the participants.
Furthermore, the program provides enrichment opportunities for students and creates an exciting classroom environment. This collaborative network will foster continuous professional development and enable teachers to refine their approach based on real-world experiences and feedback. With the prospect of more joyful classrooms, SEAQiM set the impact of this innovative course to be easy, profound, and far-reaching.
