Yogyakarta, 4 April 2018 – SEAQiM has been running Course on Southeast Asia Realistic Mathematics Education, often shortened to SEA RME. The course, which will last for two weeks, takes place at SEAQiM Campus, PPPPTK Matematika Complex, Yogyakarta.
A total of 30 junior high school mathematics teachers take part in the SEA RME Course. They come from seven SEAMEO Member Countries namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam.
This second regular course conducted in 2018 was officially opened on 28 March 2018 by the SEAQiM Director, Dr. Wahyudi. After participating in the opening ceremony, the participants were introduced to general information of the course as well as their right and obligation.
This course aims to enhance junior high school mathematics teachers’ competence in mathematics teaching and learning using RME approach. Accordingly, the Centre invites some experts in the field from some reputable universities. One of them is Assoc. Prof. Maarten Dolk from Freudenthal Institute, Utrecht University of Netherland. His talks are not only about RME but also STEM education, such as introduction to STEM and exploring stem activities. Assoc. Prof. Maarten Dolk will guide the participants through the process of developing lesson plan, peer teaching, and teaching reflection.
At the end of the course, the participants are required to have real teaching at SMPN 4 Depok, Yogyakarta. This teaching practice will be done in group of five and each will have different RME topics to be taught. While one group is teaching the students, the other groups will perform duties as observers.
All participant will get the certificate of participation after completing the course. This ceremonial event will be held on 10 April 2018. In addition, three best academic participants will also be awarded certificate of achievement.
SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM) is an institution under the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization established on July 13, 2009. SEAQiM’s mission is to hold relevant and qualified programmes to support professional excellence of mathematics teachers and education personnel in Southeast Asia. SEAQiM regularly organizes various activities in the form of training, courses, research and development, seminars, and symposium on a regional and international scale.
