
Jogjakarta – Fifty primary schools teachers from Jogjakarta and its surrounding joined math camp from August 24 to 27, 2015. The activity was one of the Centre’s programmes in this fiscal year. Math camp, which was mainly hold in Gamma Room PPPPTK Matematika, was officially opened by Prof. Subanar, Ph.D, the Director of SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics.
This camp was unlike ordinary camp, this camp was unique since the participants did not set up a tent and stay in it. All teachers who participated in the math camp stayed in the dormitory of PPPPTK Matematika. Meanwhile, when the facilitators requested them to complete the given tasks, the participants did them in team as if they were having real camping. During the math camp, the facilitators who were all from SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics delivered different types of lessons and tasks. The participants got some material topics such as Math Olympiad, Outdoor Mathematics, Proof and Argument, Math and Art, Hand on Activity, Math Games, Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Mathematical Exploration and Investigation. Those activities provided them with knowledge that mathematics is actually joyful and challenging for students. In this way, students will find that mathematics is interesting. The Outdoor Mathematics session was conducted in Bumi Perkemahan Karang Pramuka, Kaliurang, Jogjakarta. The essential of this activity was to show them that mathematics can be learnt both inside and outside class to avoid boredom.
Mr. Agustinus Andika, the participants from SD. Kanisius Kotabaru 1, said “The activities in math camp are important and useful for the teachers because we can learn the various teaching ways so that we can teach students by several approaches. Additionally, we get the knowledge from other teachers”.
Math Camp for Primary School Teachers was officially closed by the Director of SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics on August 27, 2015. All participants were impressed to join this programme. Within the three days, they have learnt, discussed and shared valuable experiences and knowledge on mathematics.
