
The In-Country Course on STEM for Mathematics Learning and Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) for teachers in Toba Regency was successfully held from November 11–15, 2024. This collaborative effort between the SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM) and the Education, Culture, and Sports of Toba Regency aimed to equip teachers with advanced methodologies for integrating STEM and RME principles into their mathematics teaching practices.
The program attracted 80 participants, comprising primary school teachers and junior high school mathematics teachers from across Toba Regency. Over five intensive days, participants immersed themselves in interactive courses and thought-provoking discussions led by a distinguished team of facilitators from SEAQiM and partner universities. These experts included Puji Iryanti, Gusnandar Yoga Utama, Uki Rahmawati, Fina Hanifa Hidayati, Wisnuningtyas Wirani, Miftahul Hidayah and Nina Agustyaningrum each of whom brought unique expertise to the training.
During the opening ceremony, Mr. Ricardo, Head of the Education, Culture, and Sports of Toba Regency, extended his heartfelt gratitude to SEAQiM for their unwavering support in advancing the quality of education in Toba Regency. He underscored the importance of active participation, urging attendees to engage fully with the program and leverage the training to enhance their professional competencies. Ms. Puji Iryanti, the Deputy Director for Administration SEAQiM, inspired the participants with her motivational address, emphasizing the importance of disseminating the knowledge gained during the course to colleagues and communities, thereby creating a ripple effect of positive change in education.
The course provided a comprehensive exploration of crucial topics, such as mathematical literacy, problem-solving, STEM integration in mathematics education, and the foundational principles of RME. Sessions were thoughtfully designed to combine theory with practical applications, allowing participants to engage in hands-on activities and real-world problem-solving scenarios. These activities deepened their understanding and sparked enthusiasm and creativity in reimagining how mathematics could be taught effectively in their classrooms.
The closing ceremony celebrated the participants’ achievements and marked the conclusion of a transformative learning journey. Teachers expressed their gratitude for the well-structured program, sharing testimonials about how the insights and strategies they gained would empower them to foster more engaging and meaningful learning experiences for their students. Many participants committed to applying innovative teaching approaches in their classrooms and sharing the knowledge with fellow educators in their schools.
This successful initiative reflects SEAQiM’s steadfast commitment to enhancing the quality of mathematics education across Southeast Asia.
