Sumbawa Besar, Indonesia – Responding to the findings of Rapor Pendidikan and INOVASI reports, which pointed out significant challenges in student numeracy achievements in the region, particularly in Sumbawa. These findings underscored an urgent need for enhancing teachers’ abilities to teach numeracy in engaging, contextual, and meaningful ways. SEAQiM in collaboration with the Kelompok Kerja Guru (KKG) and Komunitas Belajar Gugus 1 Kecamatan Sumbawa, successfully conducted the in-country course “In-country Course Pembelajaran Matematika Realistik untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Numerasi Guru Sekolah Dasar di Sumbawa”. This impactful four-day training was held at Sekolah Dasar Negeri 1 Sumbawa from 28 April to 1 May 2025.
The event gathered 30 enthusiastic primary school teachers from across Kecamatan Sumbawa, all united by a common goal of enhancing their competence in delivering relevant and effective numeracy education for their students in the 21st century.
The course commenced with an earnest opening ceremony led by Sutan Sahrir, S.Sos., Head of GTK (Teachers and Education Personnel Division) at the Department of Education and Culture of Sumbawa Regency, representatives from the Korwil Bidang Pendidikan Kecamatan Sumbawa, the Deputy Director of Administration SEAQiM, the Principal of SDN 1 Sumbawa, the local organizing committee, SEAQiM team, and all participating teachers.
In his opening speech, Mr. Sutan Sahrir warmly greeted the SEAQiM team and all participants and emphasised the importance of this training. He expressed his sincere hope that participants would fully commit to the program and urged teachers to embrace this learning opportunity, integrating new methods into their daily classroom practices.
Participants benefited learn from sessions led by facilitators from SEAQiM; Dr. Sumardyono and Puji Iryanti, M.Sc.Ed, and from BBGP DIY; Sumadi, S.Pd., M.Si and Estina Ekawati, S.Si., M.Pd.Si. These facilitators brought a wealth of experience and insights, delivering content that ranged from Policy Frameworks for Numeracy Improvement, Understanding the Importance of International Assessments, Principles of Realistic Mathematics Education, Concepts of Numeracy and Contextual Mathematical Applications, Mathematical Modelling and Problem-Solving Strategies, Designing and Implementing Numeracy-Integrated Lesson Plans and Assessments.
This training is part of SEAQiM’s mission to provide high-quality education fostering 21st-century skills. Participants are envisioned to implement what they have learned within their classrooms, disseminating new methods and insights to their colleagues through KKG forums and learning communities.
Through this collaborative and forward-thinking initiative, it is hoped that the seeds of improved numeracy education have been firmly planted in Sumbawa, promising brighter futures for its students.
