Collaborate with BGP and BPMP NTT, SEAQiM Organized Innovative Course on Realistic Mathematics Education to Equips Primary School Teachers in Enhancing Numeracy Skills

Kupang – The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology provides a “Rapor Pendidikan” Platform that Regional Governments, School Principals, and teachers can access. Rapor Pendidikan contains results of the National Assessment in student numeracy and literacy achievements, character surveys, and learning environment surveys. Rapor Pendidikan provides information on aspects that need to be improved by the Regional Government, Schools and Teachers. Regarding students’ numeracy abilities in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province, many elementary school students still need to reach the minimum competency.

Under the collaboration titled “Peningkatan Kompetensi Guru dalam Implementasi Kebijakan Merdeka Belajar melalui Pendekatan Kemitraan antara 7 SEAMEO Centre Indonesia, BGP NTT, dan BPMP NTT”, SEAQiM contributed to improving the ability of primary school teachers to design numeracy-based learning by organizing in-country course “Pembelajaran Matematika Realistik untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Numerasi Guru Sekolah Dasar di Nusa Tenggara Timur”. The course was conducted from March 4 to 7, 2024, at Hotel Neo Eltari Kupang, NTT.

The first day of the collaborative activities began with the gorgeous opening ceremony, which the Regent of Kupang Regency attended, the Acting Mayor of Kupang, the Regional Secretary of Government Bureau of NTT Province, the Directors of 7 SEAMEO Center Indonesia, Head of the BGP NTT, Head of BPMP NTT, Head of the Kupang City Education Service, Head of the Kupang Regency Education Service.

Mr. Herdiana, Head of BPMP NTT, welcomes all the attendees and fully supports the education improvement activities for equal distribution of education in Indonesia. Continued with great appreciation for 7 SCI and the Government of Kupang, the Head of BGP NTT wishes that the results of training and empowering teachers can directly impact student learning. “Even though quality has not yet been achieved in the teaching and learning process, character, numeracy, and literacy must be the focus of the education budget. All parties should collaborate to the poverty and prosperity of NTT”, said Fahrensy P. Funay, Acting Mayor of Kupang. Prof Vina Andriany, representing 7 Directors of SCI, conveys thanks for the support from all levels of the NTT government in supporting the collaboration program. Hopefully, the collaboration will bring sustainable benefits in the future.

Drs. Korinus Masneno, M.Si., the Regent of Kupang Regency, officially opened the event marked by “Gong” with wishes for the capacity improvement of teachers and supervisors who lead children to become quality human beings. The agenda continued with the signing of Perjanjian Kerja Sama among Kupang City and Regency Government, BGP NTT, BPMP NTT, and 7 SCI.

From day 2 to the last day, the course represents a significant step forward in primary mathematics education, offering comprehensive learning materials to engage students in meaningful mathematical learning experiences. During the course activities, a parallel “Workshop Pembelajaran Matematika yang Menyenangkan” was presented joyfully and meaningfully by Dr Sumardyono, SEAQiM Director.

The program was tailored to primary school educators’ specific needs and challenges, providing them with practical strategies and resources to integrate RME principles into their teaching practices. Through hands-on activities, collaborative projects, contextualizing mathematical concepts within familiar and relevant scenarios, and real-world examples, teachers learn to create dynamic learning environments that inspire curiosity and foster mathematical thinking among their students.
