
Langgur, Southeast Maluku—From December 2 to 6, 2024, SEAQiM in collaboration with Balai Guru Penggerak (BGP) Maluku hosted an inspiring professional development program called “In-Country Course: Pelatihan Pembelajaran Matematika SD yang Menyenangkan Kerja Sama dengan BGP Maluku.” The training was held at the Grand Vilia Hotel in the scenic city of Langgur. This collaboration brought together fifty (50) enthusiastic teachers committed to enhancing mathematics education.
The week-long training emphasized interactive, creative, and student-centered approaches to teaching mathematics. Under the guidance of five expert facilitators— Dr. Sri Wulandari Danoebroto, Deputy Director for Programme; Mr. Wiworo, a teacher trainer from BBGP DIY, and three SEAQiM specialists—participants explored topics like mathematical games, art integration, outdoor learning, and problem-solving techniques. They engaged in hands-on activities that can be directly implemented in classrooms.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Sumardyono, Director of SEAQiM, underscored SEAQiM’s dedication to advancing mathematics education in Southeast Asia. Mustaqim Zein Nuhuyanan, Head of the Tual Education and Culture Office, and Umar Hanubun, Head of Malra Education Office, fully supported all the teacher’s capacity improvement and development, especially in Langgur. They highlighted the region’s educational challenges, such as resource disparities and literacy deficits, and emphasized the urgency of such capacity-building programs.
During the closing ceremony, teachers shared heartfelt reflections. Faradila Dani from SD Negeri 30 Tual remarked, “For the first time, I’ve seen how mathematics can be less intimidating. I’m excited to inspire my students with what I’ve learned.” Another participant highlighted the value of differentiated instruction for diverse learners, while facilitators emphasized character education as a cornerstone of teaching.
A follow-up session at SD Inpres Ohoijang allowed the Heads of School Work Groups (K3S), Justus Huik to discuss the training further. He pledged to carry the momentum forward through collaborative workshops and dialogues with local authorities as its sustainability impacts.
SEAQiM’s efforts were celebrated by participants like Johana Damamain, Principal of SD Inpres Ohoijang, who closed the event with a call to action, encouraging teachers to continually improve and thanking SEAQiM for its invaluable support.
This transformative initiative has ignited a spark for sustainable improvement in mathematics education across Southeast Maluku, ensuring that learning is not just about numbers but also about joy and curiosity in every classroom.
