International Seminar: “Empowering Teachers, Transforming Futures” Celebrates World Teachers’ Day 2024

In commemoration of World Teachers’ Day 2024 on 5 October 2024, the Secretariat of the Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of Indonesia (MoECRT), in collaboration with SEAMEO QITEP in Language (SEAQiL), Mathematics (SEAQiM), and Science (SEAQiS), along with the Professional Development Centers of West Java, Yogyakarta (DIY), and Banten Provinces, successfully hosted an international seminar titled “Empowering Teachers, Transforming Futures.”

This seminar, held both onsite and online, brought together over 800 participants, including teachers, education professionals, and invited guests, to discuss the evolving role of educators in today’s rapidly changing environment. The seminar aimed to provide a meaningful platform for educators to enhance their pedagogical, professional, social, and personal competencies. Through insightful presentations and discussions, participants had the opportunity to learn from prominent speakers and share best practices to strengthen their commitment to teaching.

The opening ceremony featured remarks from Dr. Brian Arieska Putra, Director of SEAQiL, and John Arnold Siena, Deputy Director for Programme and Development of SEAMES. In her welcome remark, Ms. Maki Katsuno-Hayashikawa, Director of the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Jakarta, expressed her deep appreciation for the dedication of Indonesian teachers, emphasizing their pivotal role in shaping the future of education. The seminar was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Nunuk Suryani, Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel of the MoECRT, who congratulated teachers worldwide on World Teachers’ Day 2024. She hoped the seminar would serve as a valuable resource for educators’ ongoing professional development.

Keynote speakers included Dr. Itje Chodidjah and Dr. Elly Herliani, who shared their expertise and perspectives on current trends in education. The seminar also featured best practice sessions from outstanding teacher alums of SEAQiL, SEAQiM, and SEAQiS: Binar Kasih Sejati, Khairuddin, Donna Lyn M. Geronimo, Joey Lan Singson, Mohd Azim Saidon, and Muhlis. Uki Rahmawati, Reza Setiawan, and Meidina were moderating these sessions. The seminar attracted critical figures in the education sector, including the Board of Directors of SEAMEO QITEP, representatives from the Indonesian Ministry of Education, and Mr. Ferdiansyah, a member of Commission 10 of the Indonesian House of Representatives.

The “Empowering Teachers, Transforming Futures” seminar was a testament to teachers’ significant role in fostering educational transformation. By bringing together educators from across the region, the event celebrated their contributions and empowered them with knowledge and inspiration to continue shaping their students’ futures.
