This approach was originally introduced under the name SMET (Science, mathematics, Engineering, Technology) by The National Science Foundation (NSF), before changed to STEM in 2001. However, STEM is not merely an abbreviation; it is a concept of an educational approach that is needed to answer the needs of the rapidly changing world (at least from the last decade of this century). Although there is no one absolute definition agreed by experts, it is generally agreed that STEM is an integrative or interdisciplinary approach to learning Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics using real, everyday contexts.
