Reconnecting, Learning, Inspiring: SEAQiM Alumni Explore Coding & AI in Math Learning Through SEAQiM Alumni Workshop

The SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM) successfully held the SEAQiM Alumni Workshop on 8 December 2025 in a hybrid format from BBGTK Yogyakarta and via Zoom Meeting. The event was attended by both onsite and online participants from SEAMEO Member Countries, with the majority being alumni of the SEAQiM Regular Course who have actively engaged in professional development programs.

Carrying the theme “Implementation of Coding and Artificial Intelligence in Learning and the Challenges of Mathematics Learning in the AI Era,” the workshop provided a platform for educators to exchange innovative ideas and strengthen their professional networks amid rapid technological advancements.

The series of presentations began with a session by Prof. Zulkardi / Prof. Ratu Ilma from Sriwijaya University, who highlighted the challenges of teaching mathematics in the age of artificial intelligence. The session encouraged participants to adapt their pedagogical strategies to meet the needs of today’s learners. One participant noted,
“This topic broadened our perspective that AI is not a threat, but a tool that can enrich the way we teach mathematics.”

The next presentation was delivered by Patrya Pratama, Executive Director of the INSPIRASI Foundation, who discussed the implementation of coding and the utilization of AI in the learning process. He emphasized that technology should strengthen, not replace, the role of teachers.
“AI can help reduce the administrative workload of teachers, allowing them to focus on what matters most: supporting students’ learning,” he shared.

Practical classroom insights were presented during the alumni sharing session, featuring Kucisti Ike Retnaningtyas, Andi Navianto, and Agus Setio, who shared their real-world experiences in applying innovative, technology-based approaches to mathematics learning in their respective schools.

Following the presentations, participants engaged in an active discussion on strategies to empower SEAQiM alumni and strengthen the SEAQiM Alumni Network (SAN). The discussion generated numerous collaborative ideas aimed at increasing alumni contributions to mathematics education across the region. A key reflection voiced during the session stated: “The strength of an alumni network lies not only in its numbers, but in our ability to support each other and share good practices to improve learning quality across the region.”

The event concluded with a report from the SAN Chair, summarizing the achievements and progress of alumni activities while encouraging continued efforts to build a dynamic and adaptive learning community in the era of artificial intelligence.
