Yogyakarta: In 2020, SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics (SEAQiM) were selected for Fulbright Specialist Program, which allows SEAQiM to invite US scholars or professionals for a short two-to-six-weeks project. This program is supported by US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) through Fulbright program. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this project can only be carried out in 2023.
The invited specialist is Dr Sharon Locke, the director of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) STEM Center. Dr Locke is a long-time partner of the centre. Previously, she has worked with the centre on several programs, such as hosting one of the SEAQiM’s specialists as visiting scholar and facilitating one of the centre’s regular courses. As the director of a STEM centre, she has considerable experience in STEM education and research.
Dr Locke will participate in several programs of SEAQiM, one of which is the Workshop on Academic Writing/Coaching Clinic, held on 6 – 9 February 2023 virtually through the zoom meeting platform. This program aims to support teachers who participated in the SEAQiM’s 7th International Symposium on Mathematics Education and Innovation (ISMEI) as presenters to prepare their papers for proceeding publication. Moreover, this workshop allows other SEAQiM alumni to have the opportunity to gain feedback on their articles.
There were 40 invited participants from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines (21 paper presenters ISMEI whose paper was selected for proceeding, 19 SEAQiM Alumni program). By the end of the program, the expected outcomes are camera-ready manuscripts ready for submission to Atlantis Press.
Meanwhile, in the opening ceremony, Ibu Puji Iryanti, the Deputy Director for Administration SEAQiM, expressed her appreciation to Dr Locke for being willing to attend in person at Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Furthermore, she motivated all participants to join the four-day workshop at·ten·tive·ly. “On behalf of the Director of SEAQiM, who is currently attending SEAMEC in the Philippines, I at this moment represent him to officially open the workshop on academic writing 2023,” said Ibu Puji Iryanti.
In the workshop, Dr Locke shared some important knowledge about writing, such as developing an introduction, Developing a literature review, and Developing research methods. The participants were invited to Google Classroom to download the material and submit the assignment to support the learning process.
