AKAHORI: ICT COMBINED WITH TRADITIONAL METHODS YIELDS THE GREATEST LEARNING OUTCOMES

Yogyakarta- In early November, SEAMEO Regional Centre for QITEP in Mathematics got a visit from the President of the Japan Association for Promotion of Educational Technology (JAPET), Prof. Kanji Akahori. During the visit, the Centre held workshops on ICT Integration into Mathematics Education from November 4 – 5 2015 in the Gamma Room at PPPPTK Matematika. The 150 participants who attended the workshops consisted of primary school teachers, secondary school mathematics teachers, lecturers, teacher trainers and academic staff.

The November 4 workshop was for primary school teachers. Participants were presented material on ‘Cognitive Learning by Bug Analysis’ and ‘Flipped Learning within the Classroom’. Conversely the workshop on November 5th was for junior and senior secondary school mathematics teachers. This consisted of sessions on ‘Skills for Video Relection’ and ‘Lesson Plan Using Digital Content’. During these workshops there was a strong focus on group discussion and using teacher experiences to come up with strategies for implementing ICT into classes.

From November 4-5 afternoon sessions were also held for lecturers and academic staff. The sessions presented during this workshop included ‘Current Situation of School Education in Japan’, ‘Do Digital Devices Work Better than Materials for Learning?’ and ‘Collaborative Brain Storming’. Prof. Kanji Akahori presented his research about the effectiveness of papers, PCs and tablets in learning. Based on his research, the greatest learning occurs when a combination of papers, PC, and tablets are used.
