Strengthening Numeracy and Literacy through Lesson Study in Jakarta: Brings Japan–Indonesia Collaboration

Jakarta, 18 August 2025 – SEAQiM, in collaboration with SEAQiL, Balai Guru dan Tenaga Kependidikan (BGTK) Jakarta, and the Center for Research on International Cooperation in Educational Development (CRICED), University of Tsukuba, Japan, successfully organized “Penguatan Numerasi dan Literasi melalui Lesson Study” at Gedung A, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Jakarta.

This event forms part of a series of initiatives held in three major cities Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Denpasar. It is held in close partnership with CRICED, University of Tsukuba, Japan, and has strong academic and technical support from Japanese education experts.

The ability to think critically, solve problems, and communicate ideas is essential in today’s ever-evolving world. Mathematics plays a central role in shaping these skills. Recognising this, the activity emphasised using Belajar Bersama Temanmu, a mathematics textbook developed by Gakko Tosho, Japan, and adopted by Indonesia’s Sistem Informasi dan Perbukuan (SIBI).

The book is designed not just to teach mathematical concepts, but also to help students connect them with real-life situations. It encourages children to reason numerically, understand instructions, and, most importantly, to learn collaboratively. As Prof. Masami Isoda, one of the key contributors to the textbook, highlighted, the book’s essence lies in fostering rich classroom communication, logical thinking, and human character development.

The program’s highlight was the Lesson Study sessions, during which Japanese primary school teachers demonstrated how mathematics can be taught in engaging, context-driven ways. Indonesian students from grades 1 and 3 took part in these classes, and more than 150 participants, including teachers, principals, supervisors, education specialists, and observers had the rare opportunity to observe and reflect together.

The sessions featured two key topics: Fractions and Number Composition & Decomposition, followed by in-depth discussions. Beyond classroom demonstrations, SEAQiM specialists facilitated workshops on effectively reading and using textbooks, making them meaningful in lesson planning, and developing mathematical thinking in students.

The opening ceremony was graced by leaders from SEAQiM, SEAQiL, BGTK Jakarta, and CRICED, as well as representatives from Indonesia’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. The event was more than a formal gathering. It was a celebration of shared vision: empowering educators to enhance numeracy and literacy, not only as academic skills but also as life competencies.

Alongside the academic sessions, participants explored exhibitions by Seibun-Sya (for Mathematics), showcasing innovative educational tools designed to inspire teachers and learners.

Through this collaborative program, participants deepened their understanding of how Japanese educators teach mathematics while also gaining fresh perspectives on effectively using textbooks. More importantly, the experience ignited new ways to help Indonesian students think critically, reason logically, and connect mathematics to their everyday lives.
