Alternative Assessments in Primary Mathematics

Paper-and-pencil test is a common form of assessment in education and it will tell the teacher how well students learn; however, it implicitly deferred the nature of education on its essence. Educational theory does not only contemplate the world of schooling – zooming out away from schooling allows zooming in on education (Sidorkin, 2011).  Paper-and-pencil test as an assessment is purely mind task. It only taps, if not all, the five lower levels of the Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning – remember, understand, apply, analyse, and evaluate. Where does the highest level of the taxonomy come in the form of an assessment? Can the assessment on this highest level, which is to create, cater to different learning styles and students will get to find joy and meaning out of what the teachers are testing? Can Mathematics be interpreted more than just numbers where data analyses can also be used to important decision making?
