This year\u2019s symposium, themed <em>\u201cEmpowering Future Generations through Emerging Technology Trends in Mathematics Education,\u201d<\/em> took place at Grand Rohan Jogja Hotel, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and aims to explore the transformative potential of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, and gamification in revolutionizing mathematics education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the rapid advancement of technology reshaping education systems globally, this event will serve as a crucial platform for educators, researchers, and policymakers to examine the integration of these emerging tools in teaching and learning practices. By leveraging the opportunities presented by technology, ISMEI 2024 seeks to ignite a renewed passion for mathematics among learners, while equipping educators with the necessary digital skills to navigate the 21st-century educational landscape.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the heart of this symposium lies the belief that mathematics education should transcend rote memorization and instead focus on meaningful applications that solve real-world problems. Emerging technologies offer a unique pathway to bridge the gap between abstract mathematical theories and tangible applications, ultimately fostering deeper student engagement and understanding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMathematics education must evolve in parallel with technological advancements,\u201d said Dr. Sumardyono, Director of SEAQiM. \u201cThis symposium is an opportunity to reimagine how we teach mathematics in an era where AI, gamification, and other digital tools have become essential components of everyday life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, Dr. Rachmadi Widdiharto, the Director of Teachers and Education Personnel for Primary Education in Indonesia noted, \u201cTechnology can serve as a powerful equalizer in education, but only if we are intentional about how we use it. This symposium will explore how we can leverage digital tools to ensure that all students have access to high-quality mathematics education\u201d, in his opening remark. The official opening by the Director of Teachers and Education Personnel for Primary Education in Indonesia remarked that SEAQiM supports the MoECRT in providing access to digital learning tools; the symposium hopes to break down barriers to education and create opportunities for marginalized communities to thrive in the digital age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year\u2019s symposium promises an exciting lineup of keynote speakers and thought leaders who shared their insights on the evolving intersections of mathematics and technology. Keynote sessions featured prominent keynote speakers such as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thiradet Jiarasuksakun explored the role of technology in mathematics education and Dr. rer. nat. Adi Nur Cahyono, M.Pd, spoke on the critical competencies required for teachers to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) effectively into their teaching practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other prominent speakers include Prof. Dr. Paulina Pannen, M.LS., who discussed flexible learning trends in education, and Dr. Lo Chung Kwan, who addressed the use of AI in mathematics education will offer a glimpse into the future of computational thinking in the classroom. These sessions, combined with workshops, parallel sessions, and panel discussions, promise a comprehensive exploration of the future of mathematics education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 8th ISMEI brought together sixty-five (65) paper presenters, a hundred onsite participants, and around a hundred online participants, consisting of educators, policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders from across Southeast Asia and beyond. One of the symposium\u2019s primary objectives is to empower educators with practical strategies and tools for utilizing technology to enhance student learning outcomes. Through workshops and hands-on sessions, participants will be introduced to new digital resources, receive guidance on their implementation, and explore how these technologies can be adapted to different learning environments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the end of the symposium, the selected papers presented at the symposium will be published in renowned academic journals, including the Southeast Asia Mathematics Education Journal (SEAMEJ) and the Southeast Asia Journal on Open and Distance Learning (ODELIA), ensuring that the insights gained from the event continue to influence educational practices across the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the world becomes increasingly interconnected and technology-driven, events like ISMEI 2024 are more critical than ever in preparing future generations for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
