The course was titled &#8220;STEM for Mathematics Learning for Junior High School Mathematics Teachers.&#8221; Thirty junior high school mathematics teachers from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Timor Leste participated in the event held at SEAQiM, Yogyakarta, from July 16-29, 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This course aimed to equip secondary school mathematics teachers from SEAMEO member countries with the knowledge and tools necessary to implement integrated STEM approaches in their classrooms. Throughout the course, participants explored various strategies, pedagogies, and resources for integrating STEM concepts into mathematics instruction, focusing on real-world applications and connections. They learned how to design and facilitate interdisciplinary and integrated STEM lessons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SEAQiM featured STEM experts such as Dr. Ariyadi Wijaya, an Associate Professor at Yogyakarta State University; Dr. Scott Bartholomew, an Assistant Professor at Brigham Young University; Dr. Alongkot Maiduang, a Senior Academic Officer at the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST); Wahid Yunianto, a PhD student of Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria; and others from SEAQiM and BBGP-DIY.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the training, participants received materials on topics like integrating art in STEM learning, STEM activities in junior high school, the engineering design process, and many more exciting subjects. They worked in groups on engaging STEM activities, guided directly by facilitators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the second week, they had the opportunity to choose one of the STEM activities they had learned in class to teach at a selected school. The chosen school was SMP N 4 Pakem Yogyakarta. Six classes from grades 8 and 9 were involved in this &#8220;real teaching&#8221; activity. Participants were divided into six groups, each selecting one model teacher to represent their group. The other groups served as observers, accompanied by the SEAQiM academic team, to provide feedback during the reflection session. The six participant groups chose several STEM activities, including Paper Table, Tumblewing, Roller Coaster, Building Warehouse, and Roll Model.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the last day, a culture show was held where participants could introduce their cultural heritage through dance, song, or other cultural performances. One participant from Thailand, Ms. Rujiluk, introduced Thai culinary culture by cooking Tom Yum live and sharing it with all participants and guests. &#8220;I believe the culture in Southeast Asia is very diverse, and I want to introduce all participants to Thailand&#8217;s famous cuisine, Tom Yum, and how to make it. I am proud to be a participant from Thailand attending the STEM training at SEAQiM,&#8221; said Ms. Rujiluk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the closing ceremony, Dr. Sumardyono, Director of SEAQiM, congratulated all participants on completing the course and expressed hope that the knowledge gained would be beneficial and could be disseminated to other teachers in their communities.
