Learning mathematics is not just talking about algorithms or formulas, but more than that, there is a bigger goal which is the purpose of learning mathematics. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) formulated the goals of mathematics education as comprising mathematical problem solving, mathematical reasoning, mathematical communication, mathematical connections (learning to relate ideas) and mathematics representation (learning to represent mathematics). Based on this, of course we can see that mathematics has a strategic role to help build the character of our children. The ability to analyze and solve problems along with communication skills are examples of some of the life skills that will support the success of our children in the future. Yet, the role of mathematics will only fulfill its purpose if we are able to design learning activities that can stimulate students in developing these abilities.<\/p>\n
